Golden sandy beaches abound on the eastern coast of cyprus in the free part of the Ammochostos (Famagusta) area. For many years and for many millions of visitors, the popular holiday resorts of agia napa and Paralimni - Protaras have been a true paradise for lovers of the sea, watersports and night life. The vivid blue sky reflected in the clear waters lapping the Blue Flag beaches of this sub-tropical paradise, truly lift the spirit! But there is more to the area. Inland you don’t have to travel far to explore and admire a number of Byzantine churches plus Frankish monuments and museums. The magical landscape was an inspiration to the Greek Nobel Poet Laureate, George Seferis. Hundreds of windmills populate the landscape surrounding Protaras and Paralimni, drawing up water for land irrigation.

Sights worth seeing include the medieval monastery at the centre of agia napa. This is literally within disco dancing distance of the infamous bars and clubs in ‘The Square’ area of town which continue to attract the young ( and young at heart ) wanting to let their hair down or exercise their vocal chords and undiscovered singing talent on an unsuspecting song plucked from the Karaoke machine !

Away from the club scene, agia napa Harbour is a distinctive landmark with echoes of the town’s traditional charm and heritage as a fishing village. A picturesque fountain marks the entrance to the wide pedestrian walkway lined with bars and restaurants which leads to the harbour from where fishing boats and fishermen sail daily into the Mediterranean to bring home the harvest of the sea. From here you can also take day trip cruises along the nearby coast and pass Cape Greco, Protaras and towards the distant views of Famagusta, the ‘ ghost town ‘ of occupied Northern cyprus.

agia napa Harbour is also the venue for celebration and festivity throughout the year, especially during Kataklysmos in June when folk music, performers, dancers and fireworks are the usual fare for tourists and locals alike. A time of fun and laughter for all, the harbour is a charming romantic background for these festivities.
During the summer holiday season enjoyment takes on many forms, not least the sight of many younger visitors zipping along Nissi Avenue in their Quad Bikes – plus families and young lovers strolling the busy streets safely in the warm night air and enjoying their own company and soaking up the atmosphere.
You know you are not far from civilisation ( as it has now become ) when you see the obligatory McDonald’s, KFC or Pizza Hut – tastefully augmented by the presence of a Burger King near The Square. However, the choice of cuisine is actually much greater than the repertoire of American fast food. If you fancy a Chinese, the choice is yours – so too with Italian restaurants, Indians and good ‘ol British Fish `n Chips’…. And, if you can stomach it, why not hitch a ride on ayia napa’s famous Sling Shot which is often compared to doing a bungee jump backwards!
